Finding the Frequency of Your Purpose

Most people in life want to be excited by what they do. Excited to get out of bed in the morning, excited to be in a relationship, or excited for their job. In reality, what humans actually need is peace.

Believe it or not, excitement is a type of stress. It’s referred to as “eustress” (pronounced you-stress). It’s the same type of stress you experience on rollercoasters and most people go through their lives thinking that excitement is what’s missing. Eustress isn’t a bad thing, but it’s not what’s going to make you happy because it’s not sustainable.

As humans, we love to get excited about new ideas or new adventures, and that’s not a bad thing! But what actually satisfies us is peace. Once the newness and excitement wear off in a new job or relationship what we need to feel is peace.

How do we know if something brings us peace? By listening to what our bodies are telling us. That sounds pretty woo-woo, but hear me out. Our bodies are phenomenal biological devices that can pick up on things way before our brain even registers there’s danger. The trouble is, we routinely stamp out our intuition because we don’t want to believe it.

When we ignore a red flag in a relationship or in a new job, our intuition gets a little dimmer. It’s trying to reach us through all of the noise in our heads caused by our thoughts. Eventually, we end up stuck in life wondering what the hell happened. You ignored your own body telling you something wasn’t right for you.

It’s also incredibly easy to let doubt slip in. You get a gut feeling and then you immediately start questioning it. The difference between intrusive thoughts and gut feelings is just that — feeling. A gut feeling seemingly comes from nowhere and brings with it a peaceful type of feeling. Intrusive thoughts stem from fear.

A good experiment to try is to check in with yourself and how you’re feeling in different situations. Ask yourself periodically at work or when you’re spending time with someone, “How am I feeling right now?”

And then pay attention to your body: are your shoulders tense? Is your stomach uneasy? Is your heart or mind racing? Is your jaw clenched? Or are you calm? Even if you have a lot on your plate, do you feel capable? Do you feel peace or dread? Calm or fearful?

Understanding the difference between how these emotions are felt in the body can help you understand what you value and what your needs are. If you feel stuck you may also have a limiting subconscious belief that needs to be addressed.

In her book, The Mountain is You, Brianna Weist says that procrastination is helping us fulfill a need. We should look closer at procrastination because it’s meeting a need that we have; it can also help us uncover an unconscious need we didn’t know we had. Like if we’re overeating to soothe, what do we need soothing from?

Peace is when you start strumming on the frequency of your purpose.

I’m going to let you in on a little secret: not every thought you think is true. Listening to what our bodies are telling us can make a huge difference in understanding ourselves. We can use peace as a compass to help direct us toward a more satisfying existence we didn’t know we were looking for.

So, start looking for what brings you peace and follow it.
